Prayer
Flags for Peace
The Tibetan Prayer Flag is called “Lung Ta” in Tibetan,
which means Wind Horse. Both the wind and
horse are vehicles of
movement, with the horse carrying material form and the wind, spiritual
form. The Tibetan Prayer Flag is,
therefore,
the vehicle by which a prayer is carried on the wind.
Prayer Flags are usually created by Tibetan
Monks or Lamas
as a spiritual practice. They are sewn
in groups of five in five colors representing the five positions of
Buddha and
the five elements. Usually, at the center of each flag there is a wind
horse
with the wish-fulfilling jewel on its back. The
horse is accompanied by supernatural creatures,
sacred mantras, and
the eight auspicious symbols.
The most common mantra on the flag is
the “Om mani pad me
hung,” often translated as “a jewel in a lotus,” which
is a metaphorical prayer for compassion and enlightenment.
Prayer flags carry prayers for all
beings. It is believed that blessings are
released to
those who hang these prayers for peace, enlightenment, and compassion
for the
benefit of us all.
