This
hand-carved prayer stone, shown from both sides, is an elaboration on a
tradition of religious pilgrims who would carve river stones with
prayers on their way to Tibetan Buddhist holy sites. At their
destination, the pilgrims would leave the stones at the temple with the
Om mani padme hung
prayer and other symbols to bless all who might come to the
temple. In the Himalayas, one sees this same prayer carved into
huge boulders near well-trodden paths to bless all passersby.
This particular stone is carved with a flat base to stand on a table
for easy viewing of both sides.

This
is a traditional oval-shaped Tibetan prayer stone. The prayer is
the Om mani padme hung
blessing or mantra that graces so many Tibetan items, promoting the
peace and well-being of all sentient beings. The icon of the eyes
is often referred to as "the compassionate eyes of Buddha,"
including the third eye that sees on a spiritual level rather than just
the physical level.
